A Texas Beer Garden Near Mission

Twenty minutes east of Mission, under the oaks behind GW's BBQ: smoked cocktails, a deep bourbon and tequila list, and barbecue worth the drive on its own.

Twenty Minutes East, and Worth It

From Mission it's a straight run east on Expressway 83 into San Juan. Post Oak sits behind GW's BBQ — far enough to feel like going somewhere, close enough that you're not committing your whole evening to the road.

Start with our signature — The Post Oak Old Fashioned, built on Buffalo Trace, smoked demerara syrup, premium bitters and Luxardo cherries over crystal-clear ice. Then work through Texas Ranch Water, the Pitmaster Margarita, bourbon flights, or a zero-proof pour if you're driving back to Mission.

What Mission Makes the Drive For

  • Barbecue that's been called some of the best in Texas, next door
  • Smoked cocktails and the Post Oak Old Fashioned
  • Bourbon flights: Buffalo Trace, Blanton's, Weller, Macallan 12
  • Tequila flights: Don Julio 1942, Clase Azul, Casa Dragones
  • Open-air seating — no crowded room, no shouting over a speaker

Grab a tray of brisket, beef ribs and hand-made sausage at GW's — a 2026 James Beard Award semifinalist and #5 on Texas Monthly's Top 50 — then walk over to the garden for a cocktail. It's the whole evening in one stop, 20 minutes from Mission.

Make It the Destination, Not the Stop

Mission is the far end of this drive, and we'd rather be honest about that than pretend it's around the corner. Twenty minutes each way only makes sense if the place is worth it — so plan on staying.

The way to do it: eat at GW's first, while the brisket is still coming off the pit, then move to the garden and take your time. A flight is a slow drink by design. Between the two you've got a full evening in one parking lot, which beats three stops and a designated driver arguing about the next one.

It's also the right call for the occasions Mission usually drives to McAllen for — anniversaries, birthdays, the group dinner nobody wants to host. Reserve ahead on live-music weekends; the Valley finds out fast.
